The Met Office – Manager of Managers – A Video Case Study

The Met Office produces over 4 million forecasts every day; providing vital weather services that customers and the public rely on for their protection and well-being. They process and store more than 10 million observations, complete 20 quadrillion calculations and archive 10 terabytes of model data – every single day. Complex, state-of-the-art technology underpins all this and needs to be well managed.

To prevent issues that might bring the organisation to a halt IT staff within the Operations Centre need to have visibility in to the events that occur in their environment. They must know how and when to deal with those events and be able to act proactively and quickly. The Service and System Monitoring Team provide real time monitoring of application, data and infrastructure components vital to the delivery of services – watching over the health of everything that the business is reliant on to function.

In this short video Service and System Monitoring team leader Hilary Palmer and technical lead Eddy Hemmings describe how they chose Interlink Software’s Manager of Managers as a means of leveraging business service management information to align IT Operations with business priorities.

Their goal was to have a higher layer management platform that collects, consolidates and correlates IT events and alert information across multiple and diverse management systems, devices, services and applications. Integrations bring in alert information from across the business, including their high-performance supercomputer, mainframe, right through to their high-performance storage systems – displaying it in a single pane of glass. As Hilary puts it – “the IT Operations team describe the Manager of Managers as their eyes and that they are blind without it.”

Learn how the Met Office have achieved:

  • Bidirectional integration with IBM Tivoli Monitoring and Nagios Core mid-level platforms
  • The ability to raise and manage BMC Remedy IT Service Management tool incidents from within both MoM dashboard and from the Remedy tool-set itself
  • The removal of a lot of unnecessary alerts and are able to manage alerts more effectively
  • A reduction in the number of dashboards and alternative event notification routes that IT Operations need to use
